Hi Phil, yes, salmonella is a very dangerous bacteria and can cause a wide variety of serious medical conditions. Have a dig around the blog, you will find quite a few references to Salmonella. One of the main causes of salmonella poisoning is what we call cross contamination. Also improper storage of food and wrong cooking procedures.
Hi Melanie, Thanks for your imput. I’m glad to hear that these workers all recovered from their salmonella infections. Most salmonella cases are mild to moderate in severity. This may have a lot to do with their body’s immune responce, that is to say if their lymphocyte type “B” cells had any prior record stored from a previous salmonella infection. Even a partial corelation between the salmonella strain at hand and any previous infection can be enough to lessen the severity of an infection.

One thing that I would like to say in reply is that it is important to remember that we are responsible for this type of increased bacterial virulance. The reason is because we bave become so far removed now from the integrity that exists in the natural world that nature is starting to fight back. We think, falsely, that we can manipulate the forces that exist in nature and that nature “shouldn’t” react back. In the natural scenario that existed before the advent of the agricultural era animals were killed and eaten ASAP. Now we slaughter hundreds of thousands of animals in a single slaughter house in a single day. As much as we would like to try to control the environment in which this happens, we are creating vectors forbacterial development on an unprecidented scale. This is also true for every stage of rearing and handling the animals. Andy.
